Plot C.H.U.D.
A spree of bizarre murders in New York City seem to point to a group of grotesquely deformed vagrants living in the sewers. A courageous policeman, a photo journalist and his girlfriend, and a nutty bum, who seems to know a lot about the creatures, band together to try and determine what the creatures are and how to stop them. They come to be known as C.H.U.D., Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller…

Making of C.H.U.D.
“C.H.U.D.” is an acronym for “Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller”, but it also means “Contamination Hazard Urban Disposal”, as one can read on the crates full of toxic materials.
In 2011, as an April Fool’s Day joke, the Criterion Collection, the USA’s most prestigious distributor of home video, announced that it was releasing a special-edition DVD and Blu-ray Disc of the film with spine number 573. It was later assigned to The Music Room (1958). C.H.U.D. did however receive a special edition Blu-ray release from Arrow Video in 2016.
The original concept art of the C.H.U.D.s (featured in the still gallery of the Anchor Bay DVD release) shows that their faces looked more animal like in appearance.
Some movie posters for the film featured a long text preamble that read: ”A recent article in a New York newspaper reported that there were large colonies of people living under the city… The paper was incorrect. What is living under the city is not human. C.H.U.D. is under the city.”
Our view on C.H.U.D.
‘C.H.U.D.’ is an example of a good B horror movie of the eighties. As there was no bad CGI and practical effects were expensive, you don’t see a lot of the creatures.
The scientists are trying to get a public area closed, but only to face opposition from the powers in charge who feel that any form of closure would hurt the economy. But there are some nasty creatures living in the sewers of New York who like human flesh.
If you’re a fan of ‘monster-munching’ movies, or like your old cheesy eighties horror flicks, this one definitely is an Exploitflix must see!
