Making of Boogey-man II
Boogey-man II is a sequel to the 1980 film The Boogeyman. Like its predecessor, it was banned in the UK as a “video nasty” during the 1980s.
The first half of the original version this movie is built up almost entirely out of flashback footage from part one. Ulli Lommel’s Boogeyman 2: Director’s Cut (2003) is approximately 85 percent of the footage from the original film. When asked during an interview in 2010 if that was due to a lack of inspiration, Ulli Lommel just replied, “It was ALL inspiration.”
This movie was filmed in 1981, but released in 1983.
Filmed for ten days at Ulli Lommel and Suzanna Love’s house in Los Angeles, and an additional three days around California.
Director Ulli Lommel and horror author Dennis Etchison worked together on a script for “Boogeyman 2” when it was planned to be a sequel produced by Paramount Pictures.
Ulli Lommel told the investors that if he could do whatever he wanted and call it Boogeyman II, then he would do it. They said okay.
Ulli Lommel didn’t want to make a sequel at all. He was young and rebellious and thought sequels were a stupid corporate exploitation idea. So when he finally did it he played himself – a director who didn’t want to make that movie.
Directed by Bruce Starr and an uncredited Ulli Lommel, it was written by Starr, Lommel and the original film’s star, Suzanna Love (Lommel’s wife), although the writing goes uncredited in the film.
Our view on Boogey-man II
Boogey-man II is known for being one of the worst sequels in history. When Boogeyman from 1980 became a huge hit every studio wanted to ask Ulli Lommel to do a sequel. For a while he refused but when he finally gave in he turned out one of the worst films ever made. Boogeyman 2 starts with over forty-minutes of footage from the first film and then the second half had the director starring as a director being forced into making a sequel and the boogeyman shows up to kill the producer’s.
If you have the dvd version it is worse. The new footage is shown in Black and White and in fast forward because Ulli Lommel liked it that way. Avoid unless you have the tape version, Exploitflix says.
